IMO, Adblock should only be used for sites that abuse you with ads or have more ads than content.

<a href="http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2007/01/a-world-of-endless-advertisements.html" rel="nofollow">Check out this Coding Horror post on ads for more information.</a>

I usually have Adblock off for two reasons: 1) I see it as synonymous to legalized piracy and 2) It would be hypocritical to do so as an Adsense user.

"It's disrespectful to block ads"

What a load of rubbish.

It's disrespectful to me when you create a website and fill it with shitty advertisements and then expect me to come and look at it. Especially when most of them are along the lines of "You're the 999th visitor! click here to get tricked into giving your email address to us!"

I don't mind decent websites which provide useful information/services and have 1 or 2 ads which are for decent and reputable companies.

But since most advertisements are crap and want to send me text messages telling me my fortune/love life/other crap I am going to block them.

Not only do 99.9% of them apply only to America (where I DON'T live) but I will never click on them anyway

The morons who think it's their duty to fill their browser chock-full of crap while reading 4 words per line on their favourite website can balance it out while rotting their brains.

And to Dylan Rosario, I hope you feel good about yourself while you ram ads down people's throats. Have you ever heard of SPAM? You should look it up in the dictionary.

People like you love inventing crap like HDCP which gives good things like HDMI a bad name

But it doesn't matter, because nothing is Un-Hackable, Un-Crackable, Un-Blockable, or Un-Copyable.

But you go ahead and try. Have fun losing the fight :)

I use Adblock, and before you all attack me.. At least hear what I to say. I make a point NOT to click on any ads I see because I do not trust them, so what's the point of even loading them when I have no intention of clicking on them? As far as I understand it, you only get paid if I click on one of your ads, not just for them loading in my browser. Alright, feel free to proceed with your assault.

@ Mr. Anynomous,
I think waaaay off base is a tad hyperbolic. The point is, if 1 in 3 people using Mozilla have downloaded Adblock, there is a chance people are using it. It doesn't matter how many people actually block ads (I am sure the number is higher) or by what method. The numbers used were to give the reader a ballpark number. The point of the article is how marketers can deal with adblock.

This article is waaay off. Some webmasters experience 15-60% ad blocking. You can block ads at the firewall, anti-virus programs and the browser. No one really has a good idea of how many ads are blocked, its impossible to track.

This is where I count on companies like AdBrite to step up their game and continually fight the efforts of people who are trying to block their ads. I think that it's disrespectful for anyone to visit someone's site and block ads. If you're going to use their resources, give back by donating or not blocking their ads.

I happen to think ad-blocking is out of line. It costs the publishers thousands of dollars a year to accommodate for people who want to skim the content and refuse to provide the publishers with any value in return. Consuming content is part of modern living, you cant get a news paper or magazine without ads, nor can you get you TV shows without them, despite the use of DVRs which is made for replay, not for skipping ads.

I liken the ad blocking to stealing. I dont think anyone would want to be on the other side, trying to eek a living from our creativity. Why are actors and musicians entitled to make money from people consuming their artistic works and web masters are not?

I have collected a whole lot of information on this subject and have recently release a technology that bypasses ad-blocking software. Of course it is up to the web master to use this Anti-Ad blocking technology with caution. With the power to deliver ads at their whim it must be critical for the publisher to recognize what is a good mix of ads and content. If people come to your site and are bombarded with ads every time the visit they will soon quit visiting your website.

I enable the publisher to deliver ads, if they abuse the tool its not my fault. People will vote with their clicks in the end.

Thats how it should be. I think that people will figure that in order to consume good content they will have to deal with the ads. Thats a fact of life and it will remain that way if I have anything to say about it.

Ciao.
