BlogTalkRadio: Audio Content For Your Site

The other day we read a post about BlogTalkRadio. It’s a great idea if used properly. BlogTalkRadio is a free service where anyone can set up a podcast or “radio talkshow” over the web, using phone. The requirements to get started are also simple. All you need is a computer and a phone. BlogTalkRadio suggests using a VOIP service, such as Skype’s Premium Service with the ability to call landlines. This allows for more interaction with listeners. To start recording is easy too. All you do is create an account, log into your switchboard, call the Host Dial-In Number (found on the switchboard) and enter your PIN number. The system will connect you and when your switchboard notifies you that you are ON AIR. The site also archives all your radio shows as podcasts, and can easily be uploaded to iTunes or shared on other websites.

Recently, BlogTalkRadio has unveiled a premium service which allows for the creation of branded private networks for major corporations. The companies can put their own ads in their shows, and have their own portal dedicated to your message and brand. Companies can also have live events streamed to their BlogTalkRadio channel or any website they want. Major corporations like Wal-Mart, Harper Collins, PBS, Women’s Day Magazine, and Sun Microsystems are already on board. Other premium services will aim regular consumers and small businesses so they can get access to an advanced switch board as well as upload non-BlogTalkRadio produced mp3’s to the site.

Podcast are continuing to be a big business as iPods and other MP3 devices continue to penetrate the market. BlogTalkRadio seems one company benefiting from the ubiquitous of the MP3 player. According to BlogTalkRadio, the site’s shows get on average 3,500,000 listens/downloads per month and close 1 million unique visitors to the site monthly.

Like we said before, used properly Audio content for your site is a good idea. But remember, should you choose to create any media content, audio or video, make sure it’s not just ads or promotion. There needs to be value in the content. Your first question in the creation of a podcast should be who is my audience, and what do I hope to achieve. If thew answer is not adding value to your clients, save your time and don’t bother, the only poeple that will listen to your podcast will be your friends and family. We also recommend you listen to some of the most popular shows and find out what works and what doesn’t. There is nothing wrong with listening to the competition, as long as you find your own voice for your business. But don’t forget copying a style or format that does not come natural to you won’t play well on the radio. Audio shows are not as easy as you think. Not planning properly, or filling your shows with stuttering or pauses can result in a low quality shows which will not serve you or your business well. For more ideas, we suggest the series of articles by Corey Deitz.
